Our Staff

The success of Camp Moosilauke is built on leadership that transforms a summer camp into a life-changing experience. Co-directors Bill and Sabina McMahon have led the camp with passion and expertise for over 30 years, helping shape Moosilauke into one of the best summer camps for boys in New Hampshire and beyond. With decades of experience in top independent schools, they bring a deep understanding of youth development, education, and community building. Bill recently retired after 22 years as Director of Enrollment and Planning at The Thacher School in California, while Sabina has held dean positions at both Northfield Mount Hermon and Thacher, and was previously a Department Head at Nightingale-Bamford. Both are Colgate graduates with advanced degrees from Columbia—Bill with an M.B.A. and Sabina with a Master’s in Education.

Their work has earned widespread recognition, including a feature in The Boston Globe (read the article here), which wrote that the McMahons have “earned unofficial doctorates in boyhood.” As one parent put it, “Bill and Sabina’s gifts for understanding boys are on display in everything from the well-trained staff to the activities to the food… Whatever success my son has in life, it will be in part because of the values, camaraderie, and pure joy Camp Moosilauke gave him.” Their dedication ensures that every camper thrives in a supportive, engaging environment designed to build moral and performance character.

Our senior administrators are all part of the McMahon/Miller/Hale family. Ken Miller, Sabina’s brother, is the Associate Director. During the off-season, Ken lives in Colorado. He graduated from Colgate, then earned a Master of Arts in Teaching, and recently retired (after 28 years!) as a middle school teacher and coach. Sabina and Ken’s sister, Ingrid Hale, is the Business Manager. Ingrid also graduated from Colgate and earned her Master’s in Nonprofit Studies at the University of Richmond. She lives in Richmond, VA, and works in college admissions. Todd Gelfand serves as our all-around operations troubleshooter. Todd was a camper for eight years and then a counselor in the 1970s. When not at Moosilauke, he lives in Los Angeles and is the Managing Partner of a C.P.A. firm.

The third generation of Millers and McMahons are our Head Counselors. Preston Miller, Ken’s oldest, graduated with a master’s degree from Colorado State University, teaches humanities and coaches track and cross country at the Mountain School in Vermont. Ken’s younger son, Jake, also a graduate of Colorado State University with a Masters in Science Education, is a science teacher and coach at Vermont Academy in Saxtons River, Vermont. Quinn, Bill and Sabina’s oldest son, graduated from Colgate and is an Associate Director of Admission at the Thacher School. Charlotte, Quinn’s wife, earned her Master of Arts in Teaching degree at Colgate. She is the Dean of Students at the Pomfret School.

Gordon “Port” Miller, the Owner, grew up at Moosilauke and took over for his father over 50 years ago. He attended Colgate University and received his doctorate from Columbia.  He has written a number of books in the field of decision-making, including “Teaching Your Child to Make Decisions” and “The Little Book for Big Decisions“. Port’s wife, Heide, helps oversee the business operations of the Camp.
